The Stylistics, “born” in the “City of Brotherly Love” came on the scene right around the same time as The Delfonics, The O’Jays, and The Spinners.”
With their charisma, style, and unusual harmonies, they evolved into one of the best-selling soul groups EVER. But first…
One of the best things to ever happen to soul music began with the sad event of two dissolved high school bands. Some members left the two groups due to being drafted or furthering their education. A teacher, Beverly Hamilton, suggested to the remaining members of the two bands that they unite – and together they gifted the world with The Stylistics.
In 1971, the group collaborated with legendary producer Thom Bell, the ingenious creator of the “Philly Sound” and released their debut self-titled album. Success was instant and phenomenal… and with the then unheard-of release of six singles from this album alone.
The Stylistics captured the imagination of the nation and the heart of its women with the first single release from that album, “You’re a Big Gil Now,” which became an immediate Top Ten hit.
Under the production of Bell, The Stylistics produced 12 consecutive top-ten hits from 1971 to 1974. This chain of hits culminated into a Grammy nomination for “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” A part of their success rested in their emphasis on smoother, sweeter ballads, the antithesis of many of their popular contemporaries.
Dunn and Smith left The Stylistics in the early 1980’s — Van Fields and Harold (Eban) Brown replaced them and the show went on just as strong.
As time went, The Stylistics began to appeal to a more mature audience while gaining in global popularity. They toured the world, even doing a concert in South Africa in front of an audience of 35,000 ardent fans at the Johannesburg Stadium.
The Stylistics, besides numerous appearances on their own, tour regularly with the ever popular “The 70’s Soul Jam,” playing to sold out venues worldwide.
Hit has followed hit for The Stylistics, making them into a shining example of longevity in a business known for its one-hit wonders, breakups and strife. All in all, The Stylistics appear on 40 albums and CD’s , including compilations.
